The Grand Prix went to Kuryłowicz & Associates for the University of Warsaw’s Faculty of Modern Languages and Institute of Applied Linguistics building.
The glittering awards ceremony for the fourth Building of the Year Created with ALUPROF Systems competition was held in Warsaw on September 8, 2022. During the evening, the most fascinating architectural achievements featuring aluminum systems by ALUPROF were announced. The jury, consisting of eminent architects Oskar Grąbczewski, Jacek Lenart, Jacek Ewý, Robert Konieczny and Elżbieta Dziubak, selected ten of the most interesting entries from Poland and three from around the world. The winner of the Grand Prix, accompanied by a cash prize of PLN 50,000, was the Kuryłowicz & Associates design engineering studio for its Faculty of Modern Languages and Institute of Applied Linguistics building, created for the University of Warsaw. The runner-up was Medusa Group, for Nobu Hotel Warsaw, with JEMS Architekci taking third place for the Warsaw Breweries complex. When it came to the category of buildings from around the world, the prize went to White Architekter for the design of the Sara Kulturhus in Skellefteå, Sweden.
As Tomasz Grela, CEO and President of the Management Board at ALUPROF SA explains:
All of the developments evaluated in the competition are top of the tree in terms of innovativeness, design and the solutions used for them. The entries combine functionality and interesting aesthetics, and, thanks to the use of green and low-emission products, they support the idea of sustainable construction. That statement is confirmed by the fact that almost fifty of the buildings which got through to stage two of this year’s competition are BREEM and LEED certified.
This year’s winning design features an aluminum and glass curtain wall which shimmers with the hues of spring. An unusual addition takes the form of a garden located on the roof, affording panoramic views of Warsaw. The facility’s muted, spacious interior is an invitation to become part of the community of scholars at the University of Warsaw.
With the online voting, the greatest acclaim went to architect Tomasz Konior of Konior Studio for his design of the Press Glass company headquarters, winning him the title of Internet Users’ Accolade.
The awards ceremony was preceded by the latest ALUPROF international Future Builders conference, where prominent architects from Poland and around the world discussed current trends and the future of architecture, design, sustainable construction and modern cities. An exchange of experience and opinions at the highest level was guaranteed by major names such as João Rodrigues, Agnieszka Kalinowska-Sołtys, Neil Pennell, Robert Schmitz, Alicja Kuczera, Mirosław Czarnik, Jacek Ewý, Ewa Kuryłowicz, Tomasz Konior and Bogdan Zaha of the famous Zaha Hadid Architects.
During a discussion entitled Transforming cities and towns for the twenty-first century, the international group of panelists spun a gripping vision of what the cities of the future could be like. Another crucial social topic, sustainable building, was addressed in a second discussion, The New European Bauhaus, an initiative intended to emphasize the importance of an environmentally friendly circular economy. Here, panelists including Jacek Ewý and Ewa Kuryłowicz talked about the initiative from the architectural viewpoint.
The program also included Zbigniew Maćków, who presented an analysis of his design for Green2Day, the state-of-the-art office building in Wrocław which won the third Building of the Year Created with ALUPROF Systems competition. This gave the audience a behind-the-scenes insight into how modern commercial building designs are created. The conference was rounded off by Michal Marcinkowski of ALUPROF, with a presentation highlighting the changes taking place in construction and pointing up the essence of cutting-edge solutions and their impact on urban spaces and architectural progress.
The event partners were Press Glass, IGP, ML System and GEZE.
