Skilfully set into a landscape almost untouched by humans, the Green Line house, designed by Mobius Architekci, is breathtaking in its simplicity of form, architectural detail and closeness to nature. One distinctive attribute is the green roof, which creates a single line with the hill on the plot of land.

The use of state-of-the-art construction materials and architectural solutions such as aluminium systems by ALUPROF S.A. made it possible to harmonise the form of the structure and the natural topography, opening the house up to the countryside around it whilst retaining the privacy required for a residential building.

Vanishing from sight

In the beginning was a plot of land set amidst fields, forests and lakes. The natural, geological folds of the ground inspired architect Przemek Olyczk to use a simple form of structure with a scale that would not be overwhelming, despite its substantial dimensions. The expression of naturalness created by the freedom with which the building is set into the morphology of the plot is magnified by the clear, slender line formed using a ninety-centimetre-thick, reinforced concrete slab. This is what determines the horizontal configuration of the shape, with its clear division into the daytime zone on the ground floor and the night-time zone on the first floor. The line of the green roof, which forms an extension of the hill, endows the building with a timeless air. 

The horizon a hand’s breadth away

On one side, the house, which has a total area of more than four hundred and sixty square metres, opens onto a lake. The use of large-scale glazing gives the household a sense of unrestricted space. Situating the windows facing south-west made it possible to maintain the main scenic axis and flood the daytime zone with natural light. In addition, the glazed walls are a transparent shield against the strong winds which blow across that part of the region. 

The Green Line house features the ALUPROF MB-86SI window and door system with a thermal break. The system is one of the company’s answers to the trend for sustainable building; with its enhanced insulating properties, it is highly recommended for energy-saving purposes. The parameters it achieves mean that, used in external architectural elements, it improves a building’s energy efficiency.

As Bożena Ryszka, Marketing and PR Director for ALUPROF S.A. explains:

The MB-86 system is one of our responses not only to the trend for sustainability in the construction industry, but also to the latest on the design front. The width of the widow frames on the outside is negligible, which maximises both the glazed area and the amount of light streaming through it. The high durability of the profiles make it possible to build large scale, heavyweight structures that lend an impression of slenderness and lightness to the panoramic glazing, for instance, giving a sense of unbounded space.

The glazed elements of the building were also based on ALUPROF’s MB-SR50N EFEKT, semi-structural façade system, The MB-SR50N HI+ is designed for the construction of lightweight suspended and infilled curtain walls, as well as glazed roofs, skylights and other similar spatial structures. What makes it distinctive is the special method for attaching the glass to the mullions and transoms, which creates the effect of a smooth glass wall divided by a structure of two-centimetre-wide perpendicular and horizontal strips. The gaps between the panes of glass are filled with a special silicon binder which ensures that the structure is air-tight and enhances its insulation properties.

Another ALUPROF product used for the house was the MB-77HS ‘Lift & Slide’ door, which is ideal for a design linking the interiors with the natural world outside. Bożena Ryszka remarks that:

The ALUPROF MB-77HS is a solution for people seeking a convenient and aesthetically pleasing door leading out onto a terrace. The construction not only means that movable glazing of considerable dimensions can be built, but is also highly stable and convenient. The mechanisms that make it easy and safe to use are an automatic drive in a visible or an invisible version and our Comfort Close brake. Another advantage of the system is that a corner version can be built at one of two possible angles; ninety degrees or two hundred and seventy. As a result, the doors can be opened to create a completely unrestricted space, with no visible mullion. And that, again, is absolutely in line with contemporary architectural trends.

The ALUPROF MB-77HS provides a structure with excellent thermal insulation and is designed for glazing options with a thickness of up to 58.5 mm. The ‘Lift & Slide’ door has a thermal insulation factor of Ufrom 0.84 W/(m2K)*, making it a leader in terms of this kind of solution. Moreover, the structure can meet up to RC2-class burglar resistance requirements. The system is offered in a full palette of RAL or NCS colours, texture varnishes and wood-like finishes. The profiles can be provided in two colours, one on the inside and a different one on the outside.

On the other side of the Green Line house, the windows look onto the interior atrium which has been given a contemporary look by concrete steps that come straight from the metropolitan jungle and are typical of public buildings. The line of the roof secludes the courtyard, guaranteeing the residents an atmosphere of privacy.

The Spirit of Warmia

There was a time when the smallholdings of Warmia and Mazuria were arranged in an ‘L’ shape and the cottages had simple, thatched gable roofs. The Green Line house features allusions to those elements. It is L-shaped and the tapering roof has a gradient of forty-five degrees, while the slats and beams bring to mind the architecture of the Warmian countryside. 

The bold solutions and compositional details incorporated in the design provide the residents with a feast for the eyes in the form of the building’s unusual architecture, interior and exterior alike.

The skilful juxtaposition of contemporary materials like aluminium, glass and concrete with a context of pervading flora is an inspiration for those who want to live in harmony with nature and adhere to the concept of energy-saving without having to abandon exceptional visual and functional attributes in their home.
