Entries to the fourth Building of the Year competition

The buildings taking part in the Building of the Year Created with ALUPROF Systems competition are located in Poland and all over the world and they were built between 1st January 2018 and 30th June 2022.

This year’s edition features plenty of interesting and well-known designs, such as the PKO Rotunda in Warsaw, one of the capital’s most iconic buildings, not to mention the hottest tourist attraction of the season, the Orientarium in the central Polish city of Łódź. Buildings like skyscrapers SkySawa and the Mennica Legacy Tower in Warsaw and Brama Miasta in Łódź make up an extensive group of entries. There is no lack of interesting retail buildings, either, including the Powiśle Power Station in Warsaw. Single-family homes featuring aluminium structures are well-represented, too. University developments are also certainly noteworthy, like Warsaw University’s ultra-modern Faculty of Modern Languages and Institute of Applied Linguistics, for example, or the new greenhouse in the Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

With each edition of the competition, more and more entries are coming from abroad. This year’s interesting designs include the Bodmin Jail Hotel, a ruined, eighteenth-century prison transformed into a luxury hotel in Cornwall (UK) or the Sara Kulturhus, which brings together a culture centre, art gallery, theatre, conference space and hotel in one complex at the heart of the northern Swedish city of Skellefteå. Hungary is also a strong presence, with Budapest designs like the luxury Jazz Loft Aquincum Apartments, which are located in an old, post-industrial loft, the Gyarmati Dezso Uszoda swimming-pool complex and the Hard Rock Hotel. This is just the tip of the iceberg, with developments from Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden all featuring among the entries. There is also a building from Iran, the ASA10 Tower office building.

The final stage of the "Building of the Year Created with ALUPROF Systems competition will see the jury, consisting of prominent architects Oskar Grąbczewski, Jacek Lenart, Jacek Ewý, Robert Konieczny and Elżbieta Dziubak, selecting the winning designs. The architects who created them will receive cash prizes, with a Grand Prix of PLN 50,000.

As Elżbieta Dziubak, Architect General for ALUPROF S.A. and secretary of the jury, explains:

We want to promote innovative architectural solutions that not only make public spaces more beautiful, but can also serve as an inspiration to other architects. Architecture creates the aesthetics of cities and towns and it’s those aesthetics that residents identify with.
